Sinopsis:
Película basada en un hecho real: la historia de Kiranjit Ahluwalia (Aishwarya Rai), que dejó la India para casarse con su marido en Londres. Aparentemente se trataba de una vida de ensueño; vivir en el extranjero, sin problemas económicos, sin ningún tipo de preocupaciones y con un futuro por delante. Todo se desvaneció cuando descubrió que su marido era un alcohólico y la sometía continuamente a maltratos físicos y psicológicos. La situación empeoró al tener dos hijos.Incapaz de soportar la brutalidad y las repetidas violaciones por parte de su marido, le prende fuego y le mata. Acusada de asesinato en primer grado, la sentencian a cadena perpetua, e ingresa en prisión. Allí se hace amiga de su compañera de celda, una mujer blanca acomodada, de la que aprende inglés. Esta mujer se siente tan conmovida por su historia que le pide a su hermanastro, un abogado de alto nivel, que lleve su caso. El proceso llega a los oídos de un grupo variopinto de trabajadores sociales surasiáticos, que gestionan una organización de pocos recursos económicos llamada Southall Black Sisters. Ellos presentan su grave situación a los medios de comunicación mediante la organización de manifestaciones, para conseguir el apoyo del público y conseguir su libertad.En última instancia es liberada por el sistema judicial, convirtiéndose en un caso que sentó precedente llamado Regina contra Ahluwalia, que redefinió la palabra PROVOCACIÓN en el caso de mujeres maltratadas.
