Sinopsis:
La historia comienza con un asesinato, sin embargo y ya desde el principio, la cara del asesino no encaja: Leland Fitzgerald no parece capaz de realizar ese acto. Le envían a un centro penitenciario juvenil en el que entabla relación con uno de los profesores, Pearl Madison. A lo largo de una serie de conversaciones, Pearl intenta descubrir el porqué del crimen. La película también sigue la evolución de los sentimientos que ha ido generado el asesinato en otros personajes: El padre de Leland, Albert Fitzgerald, un famoso escritor que vuelve a casa tras el arresto de Leland para reunirse con su ex esposa Marybeth Fitzgerald. Becky Pollard, la hermana de la víctima y ex novia de Leland, particularmente marcada por los acontecimientos. El drama también dificulta la relación entre Julie Pollard y su novio, Allen Harris.
