Sinopsis:
Charlie es un escritor frustrado que se ha rendido ya en su objetivo de ver publicada su novela de auto-ayuda. Cansado de vivir a expensas de su mujer Penélope, una agente de la policía local del pequeño pueblo costero donde viven, Charlie se traga su orgullo y acepta un trabajo basura en una empresa de atención telefónica. Allí conoce a Gus un perdedor más patético aún que él. Al cabo de un día, los dos son despedidos. Como venganza planean chantajear al párroco local, del que descubren su relación con una red ilegal de pornografía. Su, ya de por si, endeble plan criminal se complica con la aparición de Josie, la ex-novia de Gus, una manipuladora nata, una mente maquiavélica sin escrúpulos que acabará tomando el control de todo.
